A Historic Parkland Recast

The golf course at Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society opened at Barnton in 1898, after the Society left its earlier home at Musselburgh. Willie Park Jr. laid out the spacious parkland course, beginning a design history later shaped by several leading architects.

Alister MacKenzie revised the course in 1922, James Braid followed in 1930, and Fred Hawtree made further changes in the 1970s. Their work left a compact, strategic layout where shaped fairways, faced bunkers, and subtle greens ask for careful placement rather than sheer length.

A major Mackenzie & Ebert redevelopment began in 2017 and produced the present par-71 course. The project reviewed the bunkering, remodelled seven holes, and introduced three new holes, including a new par-three 16th beside a lake. Bruntsfield had already served as an Open Championship regional qualifying venue from 2011 to 2015, and the renewal gave its historic parkland a clearer modern test.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Bruntsfield suits an Edinburgh golf experience that needs contrast between rounds on exposed coastal links. Its position only three miles from the city centre makes it practical for a day combining golf with time in the capital, while the clubhouse looks across the Firth of Forth towards Fife.

Kinfern can place the course beside East Lothian names such as Gullane or North Berwick, giving golfers a mature parkland round within a region better known for seaside golf.
