The High Ground of Gullane

The No. 1 Course at Gullane Golf Club was established in 1884, two years after the club's formation. Unlike many later layouts, it is not credited to one named architect. The course developed across old linksland on Gullane Hill, where firm turf and natural movement continue to shape the round.

The opening holes climb steadily towards the hill's higher ground. From there, the routing exposes golfers to broad views across the Firth of Forth, with Edinburgh, Fife, and nearby coastal landmarks visible in clear weather. The elevation also leaves play open to changing wind, so a comfortable yardage can become far more demanding within minutes.

No. 1 rewards control over power. Sloping fairways influence stance and bounce, while well-placed bunkers guard the preferred lines into the greens. Its championship standing was reinforced when Gullane hosted the 2015 Scottish Open on a composite layout built largely around No. 1. The course remains the club's leading test, carrying older links character into modern tournament golf.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Gullane No. 1 adds height and scale to an East Lothian itinerary. Its hilltop setting gives the round a wider sense of place than many low-lying coastal links, while the village location keeps several renowned courses close by.

Kinfern can pair it with North Berwick, Muirfield, or Gullane No. 2 to create a varied Edinburgh golf experience without long transfers. It suits golfers who value firm links turf, strategic shot-making, and a course whose weather can alter the challenge throughout the day.
