A Modern Links Among Ancient Neighbours

The golf course at Craigielaw Golf Club officially opened in 2001 on the Wemyss and March Estates near Aberlady. Donald Steel designed it as a modern links suited to East Lothian's firmer, less dune-dominated ground, with the course intended to sit comfortably beside the region's older names.

Stone dykes and burns bring local character into the routing, while the wind changes how the broad fairways must be approached. The inward nine is longer than the outward half, and the demanding stretch from the par-five 11th to the long par-four 16th can decide a scorecard. Views reach across the Firth of Forth towards Fife. Gullane Hill and Edinburgh also appear in the wider outlook.

Craigielaw quickly earned a role in Scottish championship golf. It hosted the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship, served as a qualifying course for the 2007 British Seniors Open at Muirfield, and later welcomed the Scottish Senior Open in 2018 and 2019.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Craigielaw works well when an Edinburgh-region itinerary needs a convenient base as well as another round. The Lodge at Craigielaw has 30 bedrooms, with sea-view or courtyard options, and the club provides a grass practice ground plus a six-hole par-three course.

Kinfern can use the venue as a practical anchor for golf at nearby Kilspindie or Gullane, while keeping Edinburgh within easy reach. This gives travelling golfers more time for golf and less need to change accommodation between East Lothian rounds.
