Braid's Parkland at Prestongrange

The golf course at Royal Musselburgh Golf Club officially opened on 29 September 1926 after the club moved from Musselburgh Links to Prestongrange. James Braid laid out the course, with construction supervised by Hawtree and Taylor. The opening included a Scotland versus England match featuring Braid, J. H. Taylor, Harry Vardon, and Sandy Herd.

The parkland routing moves through the Prestongrange estate on elevated ground overlooking the Firth of Forth. Its par-70 card favours position and controlled approaches, with only one par five and several shorter par fours where poor placement can still complicate the next shot.

The closing stretch carries much of the course's character. The 14th, known as the Gully Hole, requires a carry over a deep hollow to a small, bunkered green. The 15th is a long dogleg with an undulating fairway, while the raised sections of the 16th green demand careful club selection.

Additional land allowed Mungo Park to reshape the layout, which reopened in 1939. The club's Old Club Cup, first awarded in 1774, remains the world's oldest golf trophy still played for competitively.

Why Add This Course to Your Golf Experience

Royal Musselburgh offers a useful change of pace within an East Lothian itinerary dominated by links golf. Its sheltered parkland setting can provide a steadier round when coastal winds are strong, while the course remains close to Edinburgh and the region's historic seaside venues.

Kinfern can pair it with Musselburgh Links for a day connecting two chapters of the club's story, or place it beside Longniddry. Practice facilities, club hire, and visitor dining also make the stop straightforward for travelling golfers.
