Archerfield Estate (Fidra Links)

From Scots Pines to Open Links

The Fidra Links at Archerfield opened in 2004, although golf had been played on the Archerfield estate for centuries before the present layout was created. David J. Russell, working with David Williams, shaped a course whose identity changes markedly across the round.

The opening holes move through corridors of towering Scots pines, which provide shelter and separation from the surrounding coastline. Fidra Island and its lighthouse form the focal point beyond the fourth, while the routing opens into more traditional linksland from the 12th onwards, bringing wider coastal views and more open conditions.

Its large greens may appear inviting, but subtle slopes make pace and positioning important. Run-up areas also preserve the option of playing approaches along the ground, giving golfers more than one way to reach many putting surfaces.

Fidra's modern competitive record includes five consecutive Ladies Scottish Opens from 2010 to 2014, followed by the Scottish Senior Open and the Paul Lawrie Match Play.
