Estuary Calm Inside Portmeirion
Hotel Portmeirion occupies an early Victorian villa on the edge of the Dwyryd Estuary, where sandy shoreline, woodland, and the colourful village sit within Sir Clough Williams-Ellis's architectural vision. Opened as a hotel in 1926, it retains features including an Italian fireplace, the Mirror Room, carved library details from the Great Exhibition of 1851, and an eighteenth-century oak staircase.
Its 14 bedrooms are decorated in a traditional Portmeirion style, with selected rooms looking across the estuary towards the mountains. The atmosphere is intimate rather than resort-like, giving golfers a quieter return after a day on the North Wales coast.
Evenings remain closely tied to the setting. The Dining Room, redesigned by Sir Terence Conran in 2005, pairs Art Deco character with wide estuary views and Modern-Welsh cooking. In warmer months, the heated outdoor pool sits on the estuary lawn. Between rounds, the hotel offers time to slow down without losing sight of the landscape that makes this part of Wales distinctive.
A Considered Choice for Your Golf Experience
Porthmadog can begin the itinerary with a course that changes character between its heathland front nine and links back nine, with Cardigan Bay and mountain views around the round. Royal St David's can follow at Harlech, where traditional links golf unfolds beneath the castle.
A Kinfern golf experience returns to Portmeirion for a very different evening: estuary views, Modern-Welsh dining, and a quiet walk through the village. The contrast works well, keeping North Wales golf at the centre while giving the hours between rounds their own memorable setting.
